The Vegan of the Year Awards 2014: Nominations now Open!

VOY 2014 logo high resThe Vegan of the Year Awards recognise the achievements of talented and dedicated vegans worldwide. A quick online search reveals countless vegans worldwide doing amazing things to help save the lives of innocent animals. We want to recognise these great people for the work they are doing in their area to promote the vegan lifestyle. Vegans deserve worldwide applause, so these awards are our way of saying β€œyou are vegan awesome!” πŸ™‚

Who can enter?

Entry is open to all vegans worldwide and is free of charge. Nominees must have strictly followed the vegan lifestyle for at least one year with the intention of being vegan for life.

The vegan lifestyle encompasses a life completely free of the use of animals and their by-products. Essentially, this means the adherence to a plant-based diet (no animal meat, eggs, dairy or honey etc.), all clothing and personal products worn and used must be vegan and not using animals in any way for entertainment or any other purpose.

From 2013 onwards, nominees for the Outstanding Vegan Business Award must be businesses owned by ethical vegans. i.e. business owners that are vegan because they love and respect animals as a priority and will always keep their business 100 percent vegan, for life.

We want your nominations!

To maximise nominations this year, we are making the process less formal and a lot easier. You can nominate by writing the name of the person, business or organisation in a comment under the blog post or by emailing vegansarecool@gmail.com. The more information you include about the nominee, the better, but if you only have limited information about them, that’s fine too.

If you know someone who you feel deserves an Award but doesn’t fit into the above categories, please nominate them anyway and let us know why they deserve an Award. If they are that vegan awesome, we may invent a category just for them!

Key Dates:

Nominations close: October 22, 2014

Winners announced: November 1, 2014

What do the winners receive?

All winners receive a certificate and a web badge/logo, that they are free to use in anyway they choose. Many past winners use the certificate and winner’s badge on their websites, in their shop windows and on social media. Many past winners use their Award status to get media articles written about them. It is a great opportunity to raise your profile among the vegan and non-vegan community.

The winner of the Outstanding Animal Rescue/Animal Rights Organisation Award will receive 100% of the proceeds of all fundraising we do over the next 12 months.

Any questions?

  1. I would like to nominate Leigh-Chantelle from Viva la Vegan. The lady is an exemplary vegan advocate and worthy of an award.

  2. I nominate humane wildlife solutions for category 5.

Wonderful attitude towards what others call nuisance wildlife. Save many who would be poisoned or trapped or shot. Educates the public.

  3. I am nominating SAFE as the best animal rights organization. SAFE is in New Zealand.
I am also nominating the Vegan Buffet, Hamilton, New Zealand as the best vegan restaurant.

  4. I want to nominate Carl D Scott for vegan of the year.
Carl has been an amazing animal rights activist for many years- organising and partaking in direct non-violent action to try and bring about change in New Zealand. We recently had New Zealand political elections and the outcome was not a good one for animal rights unfortunately, and this made Carl feel defeated as he had worked so hard for the animals. But he needs to know that he is making a huge impact every single day and he truly inspires me to become a great activist for animals one day.

  5. I would like to nominate Loving Hut Richmond – or Loving Hut in general! for best vegan restaurant. I have visited many loving huts around the world and they are so unique and delicious, but Loving Hut in Richmond is my favourite!

  6. I want to nominate Phillipa Coogan for spreading veganism every day to non-vegans in Adelaide and especially to those foodie tour people every Saturday, between 15-20 – providing tastings of vegan food and giving a speech about animals, vegan diet and peace.

  7. VEGAN BUSINESS / VEGAN RESTAURANT – Bliss Organic Cafe in Adelaide – for the last 6 years of full committment to providing vegan food to their customers (90% of which are non-vegans!), organising events and promoting veganism worldwide. Also educating others on benefits of veganism, supporting other vegan businesses and not-for-profit organisations. Viva La Vegan Revolution πŸ™‚

  8. I would like to nominate the Facebook group “Vegan Buddy – Find Answers About Veganism Here…” for Outstanding Vegan Social Media Outreach. There is a steep learning curve involved in becoming vegan and this group has helped countless new and prospective vegans in getting to grips with the vegan lifestyle.

  9. I would like to nominate Papa Ganache, a vegan bakery on Main St. in Matawan, NJ, in the Outstanding Business Category. They offer therapeutic socialization groups for youth and families, support for at-risk youth, and have delicious vegan baked goods and lunches. It is a place that always has a happy vibe!
    Amazing cupcakes!

  10. I want to nominate Louise Kelly from “I’m a little Vegan” based in Ireland. She’s doing an incredible job spreading the vegan love (& awareness) through her Facebook page & blog. Fingers crossed πŸ™‚

  11. I want to nominate Kelley Lehmen for outstanding social media outreach and activism. She has quite the following and a strong network behind her unapologetically sharing the truths of the horrors of the industries. She also has been the leader of numerous peaceful calling and email protests of the serving of foie gras in restaurants in the United States that have come out successful! A true inspiration who remains strong in the face of tragedy and resistance.

  12. I nominate Treehouse Bakery in Phoenix. They are an amazing little hole in the wall bakery in the middle of phoenix. Theyre creations are beyond good, and they should most certainly be in the running for VEGAN BUSINESS OF THE YEAR! πŸ™‚

  13. I would like to nominate Lisette Kreischer for Vegan of the year, she has written many great cookbooks and spreads the vegan message in the most respectful way.
She is also co-founder of The Dutch Weed Burger, a vegan burger made with seaweed. The best burger you will ever eat! Therefore I would also like to nominate The Dutch Weed Burger for vegan business of the year.

  16. I’d like to nominate Carrie Young-Breadon. She became vegan when her son was born bc high cholesterol ran high in her husbands family. He was born with high cholesterol and changed her life to better his, and her own:) She’s amazing!

  17. I would like to nominate my daughter, Jamie Lincourt. She has been vegan for several years, her 5 year old daughter is vegetarian by choice and they have a new 3 month old baby. In addition she is a Marine wife who is alone alot of the time due to the demands of her husbands job in the USMC. She is also a family readiness volunteer. She has trained and is available to all Marine families on their base for any reason at any time if the need help. She is beyond deserving of this honor.

She constantly puts her all into the vegan cause. She definitely deserves to be regognized for that. ❀️

Louise’s Facebook has gone from strength to strength over the past six months. Louise is an amazing cook who not only educates current vegans on exciting recipes and lifestyle products but has also managed (with her engaging and approachable posts) to encourage those who are toying with the idea of Veganism to go the whole hog. She’s a real inspiration who stands out from the crowd!

  23. I nominate Arvid Beck vegan bodybuilder for Outstanding Vegan Athlete! I don’t know anyone who is more passionate about animal rights and vegan athleticism than him

  24. I would like to nominate Amy Lynn Krell The Comforting Vegan for Outstanding Vegan Blogger. Amy is One of the First people I started following when I began my Journey through Veganism and is Always helpful in answering my questions and giving suggestions when I ask her for them. Amy is Very Worthy of receiving an Award!

  25. I nominate Aubrie Keegan as Outstanding Vegan Innovator for starting the V&V of WI, Whidbey Animal Rehoming Mission and being a chairperson on Whidbey Island Rescue Fund, a nonprofit that has since closed down but who’s sole purpose was to fundraise and network in order to help people and animals in need of financial assistance.

  27. I would like to nominate Richard Campbell for vegan of the year. Awesome individual who’s dedication and discipline inspires most. Thank you

  28. I nominate Aubrie Keegan, the founder of Vegans and Vegetarians of Whidbey Island and Whidbey Animal Rehoming Mission, for the awards of Outstanding Vegan Innovator and Vegan of the Year. Aubrie practices the vegan lifestyle with more dedication and tireless enthusiasm than anyone else I know, and in practicing constant compassion toward all animals (including humans), shines as a stellar role model for vegans, vegans-in-training, and animal rights activists in general.

  29. I would like to nominate Richard Campbell for Vegan Athlete of the Year. He is an amazing body builder that promotes a vegan lifestyle. Best regards from Venezuela!

  30. I would like to nominate Chef Cynthia Nevels and Soulgood for Outstanding Vegan Restaurant. http://www.eatsoulgood.com She is continually doing great things for the organic vegan/vegetarian community and her Pop Up is growing every day! Here’s to you Chef Cynthia!

I also nominate Holly Works facebook.com/xvxhx
For female athlete and best vegan cook for creating vegan shortcake

  32. I would like to nominate my 7 year old daughter Deirdre Mousseau. Since we became vegan, I opened up an Organic Vegan online bakery (www.vorganix.com) and she is my best advertiser. She informs her classmates, teachers and basically all the adults she sees about her veganism, about saving animals and about the health benefits. At 6 years old, she gave out cards at Valentines asking for donations to help save the Blandings Turtles (her twin brother did the same but for Whales.) They didn’t raise much but they wanted to provide a card showing that animals need love just like everyone else. For Halloween, as we are organic vegan and can’t/won’t eat any candy, they will be Trick or Treating with donation boxes to raise money for our local Humane Society (“for blankets and treats for the animals in need”) For her Christmas, and for her next birthday, she doesn’t want presents, she wants donations made to any world organization that works towards saving animals. She is non-judgemental but takes the time to explain where food comes from. She actually managed to get one little girl to tell her parents she did not want to eat “any more dead animals”, AND the little girl’s parents went vegetarian (it’s a start.) She helps me chose and create my recipes for my store. She won’t sway, even when her grandparents try to get her to eat cheese and yogurt, instead she explains the dairy and egg industry, and even though they tell her she’s wrong (and this makes her cry) she refuses to be a part of a world that condones animals cruelty. She was even given a leather jacket, and refused to wear it, decided to sell it instead and give the money to an animal shelter. I nominate my 7 year daughter, because to me, she is a super young vegan and I know she will be for life.
